The Dog Formerly Known as Ellie (now Dolly)

My sweet little girl was named Ellie when she came home with me.  I did not want to change her name because she was going through so many other changes. But yesterday when she was venturing out of her kennel to interact with Josephine and Zelda, I said, “Oh, good Ellie!”  At the sound of her name, her eyes widened, her ears went flat against her head and her tail tucked.  She turned around and ran back to her kennel!  It occurred to me that she does “freeze” every time I say her name.  We don’t know much about her past except that it was evidently traumatic.  It occurred to me that in her past, every time she heard, “ELLIE,” nothing good followed.  So I consulted with my mom about choosing a new name for her.  We agreed that she is a country girl with a rags-to-riches story and an ample chest.  DOLLY !!  That was my mom’s idea and I think it is the perfect name for this wonderful girl.  I started calling her Dolly last night and I think she is going to be fine with her new name.  And her new life.
