Only in New Orleans would we normalize texting each other, “Five inmates captured, five still on the run.” On May 15th, 10 inmates of Orleans Parish Prison pulled some plumbing off the wall and crawled through the resulting hole to freedom. Even in Metairie, people are extra-vigilant about locking doors these days. Of course, I have three dogs in my back yard, and all my neighbors have barky dogs too, so it would be pretty difficult for someone to slip up on me.
Speaking of inmates: Dolly Parton continues her journey to assimilate herself into society (and our pack). It’s a slow go. She remains fearful of so many things… she doesn’t know how to play… when Josephine tried to play the “you chase me, and I’ll chase you,” game, Dolly thought she was being attacked and ran into her kennel and stayed there. Josephine and Zelda are being incredibly patient even though Dolly’s anger management issues make her extremely unpredictable. And yet Dolly Parton watches every move the other dogs make and she sometimes mimics their behavior. I’m resigned to a life-time of adjusting and accommodating this dog because I don’t think it is reasonable to expect an institutionalized victim of abuse to turn into a happy-go-lucky dog with no issues. She shows no signs of aggression toward humans at all but she is a resource guarder and constantly on the defense waiting for something bad to happen. I don’t think I could manage her if Zelda and Josephine were not so cooperative… they seem to know when to give her a wide berth.
