FAR NIENTE CABERNET (2022)

There’s nothing better than a robust red wine with a big macho perfectly grilled steak. I picked up a Porterhouse at Rouse’s and then headed to Martin’s Wine Cellar and got a tip on this splurge-worthy Cab. I’m pretty sure the salesperson summed me up as someone who knows NOTHING about wine, especially when I questioned whether I should try the 2022 or 2024 vintage. But sometimes a younger wine from a better vintage is the better bet. Still, I was grateful the Caymus wasn’t foisted on me and I decided to spend $120 on this Saturday night special. And here is my impression: big mouth-feel, almost chewy, baked blueberry pie, the inside of a cedar cigar box on the nose, a little Caymus-y in its overall ‘designer’ feel but maybe that’s because I knew how much it cost. This wine was terrific with that Porterhouse and a little Luger’s steak sauce (which has a lot of horseradish) but might have overwhelmed anything else. This is not a bottle I will rush back to Martin’s to stock up on. It was kind of like wearing a Gucci belt just to show everyone you can afford the status symbol. I think it was minimally better than those bottles of Caymus a client gave me… and a really good match for the Angus Porterhouse. Saturday night, it did not disappoint!
