I decided to explore some of Jessie Buckley’s films prior to Hamnet. She may be just about the greatest living actress in my opinion (sorry, Meryl). In Wild Rose (2018) she does her own singing and although she may not have the best voice in the world, her ability to tell a story comes through in heart-aching earnestness. “Three chords and the truth,” is how Rose explains the appeal of a country song, and that pretty much sums up Buckley’s performance in this movie. The story is about a young woman from Glasgow who wants to be a country (not country-western) singer in Nashville. It’s a sad and sweet story about a woman with conflicting dreams and responsibilities. I love JB in this and, let’s see, I think I cried three times.
She is undoubtedly my favorite living actress. She’s one of those actors who could sit in a chair and read the phone book and I probably would be moved to tears.
MEN (2022) is scary as hell. It got a little too weird for me, but it’s worthwhile and definitely kept me engaged.
JESSIE BUCKLEY IN HAMNET (2025). This may be my favorite movie that I can never watch again. It took an emotional toll on me. She was amazing in the scene where she watched her husband’s stage production of Hamlet. This may be her career role.
The Bride (2026). Fascinating and fun. A great cast and a must-watch.
