A friend gave me a Jane Goodall Barbie doll. In addition to the girly thrill of opening the box, removing the doll, then dressing her in her binoculars and little black boots, the gift made me think of the real Jane Goodall (b. 1934) the first person to document chimpanzees using tools. She and Dian Fossey, both students of Dr. Louis Leakey, were two of the bravest women EVER. With Jane Goodall Barbie as my dinner companion, I watched Gorillas in the Mist (1988) with Sigourney Weaver. Amazing imagery. Powerful women changing the world at great risk to themselves. A good Saturday night movie if you can keep from weeping when she is murdered.
